Denver
A mile high and a million miles from average
There’s gold in them hills! And all the way back in 1858, Denver, Colorado did indeed become one of the first towns settled during the gold rush (fittingly enough, legend has it that the first permanent structure built in Denver was a saloon). But even though the first few flakes of gold were discovered right here in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, there wasn’t actually that much to be had! So as the prospectors continued west, those who stuck around began building the foundation of what was to become one of the nation’s most prosperous and innovative cities.
Today, Denver is known for being a mile high (literally) and a million miles from average. Outdoor adventure and an urban know-how set the stage for the snowcapped landscape of the surrounding Rockies, while residents and visitors of the city revel in Denver’s laid-back charms. Better still, Denver also boasts one of nation’s strongest metropolitan economies, proving that the lifestyle is both savvy and adventurous.
Denver Transportation
Walk, drive or ride the rails to get around the town and you should have no trouble at all. That’s because Denver is an easy city to navigate, with a downtown that’s pedestrian friendly but practical enough to offer free shuttles that run along the 16th Street Mall. By rail, you can bridge the gap between downtown and the suburbs, while plenty of buses and taxis also offer handy transport among the simple-to-learn grid-like structure of streets and thoroughfares.

Denver Attractions
Since Denver is the Mile High City, why not start seeing the sights in the exact spot where Denver is literally one mile above sea level? You can do just that with a visit to the State Capitol building, where the exact elevation of 5,280 feet above sea level is marked by a round brass cap embedded in the western entrance stairs. From there, you’ll find plenty of fun things to do in and around the city.
There’s no shortage of exciting outdoor activities to keep you feeling fit and energized, with hiking, biking and rafting expeditions daily throughout the majestic Rockies. Denver is also one of only two cities in America with eight professional sports teams. But if you’re looking for a more refined variety of activities, you can visit any of the hundreds of museums and galleries that make Denver the Arts Capital of the West. Or catch a concert at one of the nation’s most unique music venues, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, which is built straight into the natural landscape for amazing sound you have hear to believe.
